If you maybe dont know, Croatia is southern neighbour of Slovenia and also member of ex Yugoslavia, so when I visit Croatia I dont feel that I am in other country. All ex Yugoslavia is still a litlle bit my country. Here are some photos from my trip to Croatia. Unfortunately I break my camera during the trip and I cant show you more pics. I drive from Ljubljana to croatian city Rijeka, visiting the biggest island KRK (On Krk you must see village Baška) Then I drive along croatian coast and stop in some camps. Ther are plenty of camps everywhere and no problem to sleep. Finaly I finished in ancient city Šibenik, I visited beautiful waterfall and river KRKA.

Maribor has awesome festival

Mariboris Slovenian second biggest town. It is the capital of eastearn part of the state. City is nice, especialy in the summer happens a lot in Maribor. In Maribor every year happens big 14 day festival called LENT. On festival LENT is 18 stages and every night you can find something for yourselve. You can visit theatres, concerts and other shows. I like LENT because cultural programme is on a very high level and you will never find some Spice girls wanna be band on this Festival. Bellow you can find some pictures from MAribor. Firs pictures is a map of stages on Festival lent, which I found on LENT website. Others photos are taken by me. There are pictures of MAribor in early morning hour, when there was no people on streets and the last photo is from one awesome show from LENT.

*The most important "spaceman" from Slovenia was Herman Potočnik Noordung. (look picture)(1892-1929)

Herman Potočnik (December 22, 1892 - August 27, 1929) was a Slovene rocket engineer and pioneer of cosmonautics (astronautics). He is remembered for his work addressing the long-term habitation of space.

Potočnik was born in Pola, southern Istria,(now Pula, Croatia. His family originated from Slovenj Gradec and Vitanje, Slovenia.

1928 - He published book , Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums - der Raketen-Motor (The Problem of Space Travel - The Rocket Motor). Book comprehend 188 pages and 100 illustrations. Potočnik set out a plan for a breakthrough into space and the establishment of a permanent human presence there. He conceived a space station in detail and calculated its geostationary orbit. Potočnik described the use of orbiting spacecraft for detailed observation of the ground for peaceful and military purposes, and described how the special conditions of space could be useful for scientific experiments.

Potočnik's book described geostationary satellites (first put forward by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky) and discussed communication between them and the ground using radio, but fell short of the idea of using satellites for mass broadcasting and as telecommunications relays (developed by Arthur C. Clarke in his Wireless World article of 1945). The wheel-shaped space station served as an inspiration for further development by Wernher von Braun in 1953. Von Braun saw orbiting space stations as a stepping stone to travel to other planets. In 1968, Stanley Kubrick's ground-breaking film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, depicted such a role for "Space Station V."

Potočnik died of pneumonia in great poverty at the age of 36 in Vienna, Austria and was buried there. An obituary notice about his death was printed in one Maribor daily newspaper, mentioning his ranks (engineers and captain), his illness and nothing about his work about space. Streets in Graz and Ljubljana now bear his name.

Last weekend we had ski jumps in Planica. Planica prouds it`s self as the biggest ski jump in the world. This year winner was Gregor Schlierenzauer. He flied 232,5 meters. But record of all time still holds Björn Einar Romören from Norway, who jumped 239 meters in Planica in year 2005.

Dr. Janez Drnovšek was president of Liberal party and Slovenian prime minister in 4 different Slovenian coalitions. In 2002 he become our president. His mandate finished in December 2007. He was vegetarian.In last few years he established GIBANJE - movement for justice and development. He was also very active in international scene and did all his best to help people in Darfur. He is author of numerous books which are all best sellers in Slovenia. Dr. Janez Drnovšek is the biggest Slovenian politician we ever had. RIP.

Few day ago I was in Izola. Sea rocks :)

Izola is Mediterranean tourist town on the Slovenian coast. Special architecture of the ancient old town demonstrates a rich history of a Izola which was once an island. Fishing tradition is still present in Izola’s modern tourist offer and culinary specifics.

The ancient part of the town is located on an island which was inhabited already in the first century A.D. and later connected to the coast by a stone bridge. It was surrounded by town walls which were demolished in the beginning of the 19th century and the ruins were used to fill up the sea between the island and the coast.

Primož Trubar (June 9, 1508 – June 28, 1586) was a Slovenian Protestant reformer and the founder of the Protestant Church of Slovenia, a consolidator of the Slovenian language and the author of the first printed book in Slovenian.

While he was a Protestant preacher in Rothenburg, Bavaria, Germany, he wrote the first book in Slovenian, Catechismus and Abecedarium, which was published in 1550 in Tübingen, Germany. In the following years, he authored around 25 more books in Slovenian; the most important of them is the translation of the complete New Testament.

Trubar died in Derendingen, Germany (now part of the city of Tübingen), where he is also buried.

Portait of Primož Trubar is also on Slovenian 1-euro coin.

Janez Puh - Johann Puch - big inventor

Inventor Janez Puh (German:Johann Puch) was born on 27th June 1862 in Slovenian willage Juršinci. He was visiting primary school pri Lovrencu, later he was studying in towns Ptuj and Maribor. After Ptuj and Maribor he went on practice to Vienna and Germany and returned back to home in 1882.

In 1885 Puh moved to Graz where was working in a biycle workshop. In this period he made many improvements and innovations for bicycles.

In 1889 founded his own company named Styria VVerke and started with production of biycles named Styria.

1899 Puh together with manufacturer Werner bought old mill in southern part of Graz and founded first Puh factory (Erste Steiermarkrische Fahrradfabrik Johann Puch, A.C.)

1901 Puh factory produced first motorcycle and just 3 years later in 1904, he started wit production of cars. In 1912, the factory employed 1100 workers and was producing 300 cars, 300 motorcycles and 16,000 bicycles per year. Puch successfully obtained patents for more than 35 inventions and improvements. he had developed 21 different types of cars, lorries, buses and also some other specialized vehicles. He died on July 19, 1914 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Slovenia is South Slavic country. Slavic peoples settled the teritory of todays Slovenia, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea in two migration waves: the first wave was around year 550 and came from the Moravian lands, while the second wave, coming from the southeast and happened in 568.

Later slavic peoples between the upper Elbe River and the Karavanke mountain were united under the leadership of King Samo (Kralj Samo) This is known as Samo's Tribal Union. The tribal union collapsed after Samo's death, but a smaller Slavic tribal principality Karantania remained, with its center in the present-day region of Carinthia.

Due to pressing danger of Avar tribes from the east, Karantanians accepted union with Bavarians in 745 and later recognized Frankish rule and accepted Christianity in the 8th century. The last Slavic state formation in the region, the principality of Prince Kocelj, lost its independence in 874. Slovenian ethnic territory shrank due to pressing of Germans from the west and the arrival of Hungarians in the Pannonian plain, and stabilized in the present form in the 15th century.

The oldest documents written in a Slovenian language are the Freising manuscripts (Brižinski spomeniki), dated in years between 972 and 1022, found in 1803 in Freising, Germany. The first book printed in Slovenian language is Cattechismus and Abecedarium, written by the Protestant reformer Primož Trubar in 1550.

Slovenian lands were part of the Illyrian provinces, the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary.

Many Slovenians emigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century, mostly due to economic reasons. Those that settled in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania came to be called Windish. The largest group of Slovenians eventually ended up settling in Cleveland, Ohio and the surrounding area. The second largest group settled in Chicago principally on the Lower West Side, Chicago. Freethinkers were centered around 18th and Racine Ave. in Chicago where where they founded the Slovene National Benefit Society, other Slovenian immigrants went to southwestern Pennsylvania, southeastern Ohio and the state of West Virginia to work in the coal mines and lumber industry. Some Slovenians also went to the Pittsburgh or Youngstown, Ohio areas to work in the steel mills.

Following the 1st World War (1914-1918), they joined other South Slavs in the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, followed by Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and finally Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In the new system of banovinas (since 1929), Slovenians formed a majority in the Drava Banovina.

In 1920 people in the bilingual regions of Carinthia decided in a referendum that most of Carinthia should remain in Austria. Between the two world wars the westernmost areas inhabited by Slovenians were occupied by Italy.

From end of World War2 till independence in 1991 Slovenia was par of Yugoslavia.

25 June 1991 we gain independence from Yugoslavia in the Ten-Day War. Slovenia joined NATO on 29 March 2004 and the European Union on 1 May 2004.

Slovenia will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2008.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees after match with Turkey our team yesterday won against Germany. MBA star Dirk Nowitzki scored just 16 points (his average on Eurobasket2007 is more than 28,) beacause of slovenian though defense. Basketball team from Slovenia, country with population of just 2 million already defeated 5 national teams (Italy, France, Turkey, Poland and Germay).

Slovenia was better than Germany from first till last second of the game! At the end of first quarter Slovenia lead 21 points!!!! - After 10 minutes of game. 4 minutes before end we had advantage of 36 points!!!! can you imagine?? :) :) 36 points of advantage against European vice-champion team.

Thats why Slovenian selector Aleš Pipan gave opportunity to young players and we play
last 4 or 5 minutes with our weakest players. End score was 77:47.

Tommorow we play wit Lithuania, the only undefeated team on Eurobasket2007 besides Slovenia.

even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick
himself up, but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with
his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that moment, the Atheist cried out "Oh my God!...." Time stopped. The

bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, "You
deny my existence for all of these years; teach others I don''t exist;
and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help
you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light "It would be hypocritical of
me to suddenly ask You to treat me as Christian now, but perhaps could
you make the bear a Christian?" "Very well," said the voice.

The light went out. The river ran again. And the sounds of the forest
resumed.

And then the bear dropped his right paw ..... brought both paws

Legendary Beastie Boys released new album. When I was 15 years old I bought one album of Beastie Boys. Probably I bought it just because of the album title - Some old bullshit, a compilation from BB early hardcore times. Beastie Boys started as hardcore punk band in 1979 in New York. Later they changed style and came out with first album named Licensed to ill. Till today Beastie Boys were not capable to record bad album or even a song. Here is one song from new album:

I already presented you 3 Slovenian companies. I titled this post Slovenian company 4. That means that in future I will present you all interesting companies from Slovenia, one by one. If you are interested in business with Slovenia or you maybe planing import of some products to your country than you will maybe find some advices here.

Slovenia is a small and relatively unknown country. Our companies are mostly small but they are specialists in there field. With this post I am continuing with presenting quality Slovenian companies and to show you that label MADE IN SLOVENIA on product in most cases means that this is a high quality, state of the art product. You probably didn't know this before. If you don't believe me, then you must try our products.

Company I am presenting today is a producer of much more affordable products than previous 3 copmpanies. Alpina It is also a company from sport equipment industry, but they are producing also regular fashion man and woman shoes.

Alpina is interesting, because is world leading producer of cross-country boots, with a 30 percent world share.

In the season 2006/07 sportsmen on Alpina cross-country boots won 16 World Championship medals and and stood 46 times on the podium in the World Cup races.

Besides shoes and cross-country boots, Alpina produce also ski-boots and trekking shoes - especially for mountaineering.

In last two posts I wrote about companies PIPISTREL and SEAWAY. Now I must present you another famous slovenian company from sport industry, which is also one of world top quality producer and received many prestigious awards for quality and design. This company is called ELAN - producer of skiing equipment, snowboards,yachts and mountain bikes.

ELAN is old company with strong brand name. Like Shipman63 from SEAWAY, which was awarded for European yacht of the year 2006, Elans skis last year received award for European best skis. Ski Speedwawe won 2006 European Ski Award.

Many famous sportsmen using or were using Elan sport equipment. For example: Swede Ingemar Stenmark won 86 races in the Alpine Skiing World Cup on ELAN skies.

I previous post I wrote about aircraft producer Pipistrel, company awarded by NASA. Today I will tell you something about another successful company from Slovenia.

SEAWAY based on J&J design studio created in 1983 by Jernej and Japec Jakopin is world leading boat development company.

Seaway has two different product. One is SHIPMAN - Technological State of the art line of carbon sailing yachts and the other is SKAGEN - motor yachts. On the picture bellow is Shipman 63 (European yacht of the year 2006.)

Slovenian aircraft company Pipistrel received award from NASA

The Australian pilot Michael Coates called the plane the "Prius of airplanes" not because it's a hybrid but because it can go as fast as 170 mph and get 50 miles to the gallon. Celica - Hippest Hostel in the World

All backpackers must visit youth hostel Celica. Celica (Cell in English) has been transformed from a old prison building. They renovated old cells into interested rooms. Celica was proclaimed for the best hostel by Lonely Planet and in 2006 received award for the‘Hippest Hostel in the World’. It has 20 very artistically restorated ex prison cells with bars on the door and window. You feel inside like in fancy prison. (Dont worry - they will give you key for a room on the reception:))Each cell is unique and had been designed by plenty of artists. Because its extraordinary rooms, Celica is also on the list of most unusual places on Blue List of Lonely planet.

Hostel is located in Metelkova mesto, near Ljubljana main railway station and 5 minutes of walking away from the old town. Metelkova mesto (mesto means city) is place where many concerts and parties are happening. So after party you can easily walk to prison.

In one of previous posts I promised to write something about Slovenian superb wines and wine culture. Slovenia has a long wine tradition. Slovenian wines are not as famous as French or Californian, because of a very small production. We can not export our wine trough all over the world, because we drink almost whole production :) Average Slovenian drinks 40 liters of vine per year.

There are 3 different wine regions in Slovenia. In Maribor(second biggest city in the country)grows the oldest vine in the world. It is 440 years old and still looks awesome - check the photo bellow:

In theese 3 wine regions 100 millions liter of wine is produced. The biggest vine growing companies are Vinakoper
(Cellar of Vinakoper stores 7 millions liters of vine), VinaKras, Vino Brežice, Vinag,....

The biggest wine cellar is Goriška Brda with capacity of 18 million liters of Wine. Important wine cellars are also Krško, Ptujska vinska klet and
Metlika

There are also many small but exclusive wine producers, like for example Movia,and Simčič. Here you can find the list of Slovenian winegrowers.

I recommend to visit Osmica to try domestic Slovenian wines and food. Osmica is a prepared every year by many wine farmers and it lasts just 8 days. Winegrowers prepares parties with food and wine in wine cellar 8 day in a row.

Austrian Parliament was built by architect Baron Theophil von Hansen. Building is build in Greek style and is located in center of Vienna near Hofburg Imperial Palace and the Palace of Justice. I parliament is many rooms. We saw chambers of the national council, federal council and the house of representatives. Building was used by Emperor Franz Joseph I and Austro - Hungarian empire.

I am attending International Summer University in Vienna and today we visit very interesting company - wine producing company :)

A little history:
Robert Schlumberger was the first producer of sparkling wine in Austria. He was born in Germany, Stuttgart and was director of Ruinart, one of the best champagne houses in Reims, France. Later he started to produce champagne - wine ("Schaumwein") in Austria by using French method but Austrian grapes.

Schlumberger company was founded in 1842 and started production in Bad Vöslau, a small town south of Vienna situated in a wine-growing region. In 1843 he married Mathilde Kirchner, the daughter of a wealthy factory owner, an alliance which helped him finance his business venture. Mathilde Kirchner was also a reason that he mowed to Vienna (romantic story...)

Today is Schlumberger one of the leading producers of sparkling wine in Austria. In 1973, the company was taken over by Underberg. Warehouse capacity are about 6.000.000
bottles and they sell 3 millions bottles of sparkling wine per year.

Schlumberger sparkling wine is very good and quality, but beacause this blog is
called True mix from Slovenia i must write down that cant compete with Slovenian wines. They simply don't have so much sun in Austria and we have special soil on Carst named Terra Rosa (red soil). More about Slovenian wines in one of next posts. Temporary my blog will be True mix from Austria :)

Vienna is beautiful and although it has 2 million inhabitants there is not crowded and thanks to good organized public transport is very easy to moving trough the city. I live in Neue Donau district. This location is one of the best in Vienna. 100 meters from me is underground, 50 meters away is bus. There is a lot of parks around and many possibilities for recreations; swimming in river Danube, playing tennis, table tennis, jogging,... Vienna is really clean and tidy town. Yesterday I saw rabbit not far away from the underground station. From few hundred meters high sky towers and huge buildings in Vienna international center you need just 5-10 minutes and you are located in a beautiful park with huge trees.
